New Season to Begin at Morgan
On Saturday, March 31, we will assemble our gliders at Morgan beginning at
10:00 AM. We will then hold an initial duty officer/safety seminar and
area familiarization the same day. We will fly at Morgan until Soar Utah
begins operations in May at Heber at which time we will move the gliders to
Heber. By beginning club operations at Morgan we should add about a month
to our season while providing members with a new area to explore.
Glider Manuals Available Everyone should have a manual for each glider they fly. Manuals are available for each of the club gliders. Manuals are printed on 8.5" x 11" paper and spiral bound with a clear plastic cover just like the manuals in our locker in the Soar Utah hangar. Charges reflect the cost of copying, binding and postage. If you are interested send your check for the appropriate amount to Fred Wright at 2116 E. Lambourne Ave., SLC, UT 84109. Be sure to include your mailing address. 2-33 manual $ 6.00; 1-34 manual $ 6.00; Grob manual $ 9.00; Postage* $ 5.00. To keep things simple I will only accept mail-in orders accompanied by a check. Do not phone in your order. After March 1st I will have the manuals copied and bound and mail them off to you. *Postage is the same for one manual or all three.
1-34 to Minden -
Parke Byron will take the 1-34 to Minden in mid-March for a couple of weeks
of wave flying. Anyone interested in flying the 1-34 out there should
contact Parke. The 1-34 will return to Morgan in time for the March 31
assembly date.
Shirts -
We are assuming that everyone who has ordered and been billed for a shirt
has received theirs. If not call Dale Taylor soon.
Associate Dues Billing Error -
When the board raised association dues last year associate member dues
became $100 per year. Last month associate members were billed $75 for 2001
which was $25 short. The additional $25 appears on this month's billing.

Treasurer's Report - Jim Krog
As some of you may have noticed the transition from the old board to the new has had a few problems, mostly in the area of treasurer. Be assured our funds are intact and correctly accounted for. That is not a problem. The associate member dues were not done right as noted by Fred on the front page. And now as I get deeper into the workings of this job I find that the check sent to the SSA in December to renew all of our club's SSA memberships never arrived at the SSA offices. We'll blame it on USPS. I just now redid the paper work to renew our SSA memberships and cut a new check and stopped payment on the old check. Lisa at SSA has been helpful in this process and is working hard to prevent a lapse in our magazine subscriptions. Better times are ahead. Also note the membership roster included with this billing. I have included the inactive members with hopes that any of you who see these people at times might try to reactivate them. Our club is doing well but anything we can do to increase membership and activity will only help us to gain more enjoyment from our association. To encourage new member growth we have assembled a prospective member packet to be given to anyone who expresses an interest in joining the club. These are available from me and a supply will be in our cabinet at Heber to give to anyone who walks on at the airport.
Vice-Presidents Report - Parke Byron
The club experienced remarkable growth in new private sailplane ownership in the last half of 2000 and the trend continues with 2 more ships added already this year. The club has also been trying to encourage pilot development with respect to cross-country soaring flights. I have found that there are a sufficient number of pilots interested in participating in cross-country race type events to pursue this activity for our club. Additionally, regular members can participate by flying the 1-34 or Grob. Here is a preliminary outline of thoughts on how to implement this program: (as always, member input is welcome)
1. Competition design will be based on other clubs experience. The Arizona Soaring Association has an outstanding reputation for promoting and holding cross-country events and competitions.
2. Competition will use a handicapping system (see SSA handicaps in chart below) for gliders as in sports class with perhaps classes based on pilot experience.
3. Regular members flying club ships must hold at least the Bronze Badge to compete in club ships.
4. Club members can combine badge attempts with competition.
5. Competition may have two formats. Flights conducted on different days on an individual basis and scored as such (time and distance). And contests conducted on one day with classic start and finish gates.
6. Include a mentoring program where our contest and cross-country experienced members work with our less experienced members to promote a learning environment. This can be done with classroom type instruction, dual flights in the Grob and follow-me flights in multiple gliders.
