News comes in two varieties, good news and bad news, and unfortunately this months newsletter has some of both. First the bad news. On May 16, Richard Smith was seriously injured while flying his new Russia AC- 4 down at Cedar Valley. Richard was in the landing pattern when the glider apparently spun in. I do not have any more confirmed information then that. Richard is now at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake. I visited him on Monday June 1. He is in good spirits and doing well, but is still suffering the effects of a concussion. He would like another week or two before receiving visitors. Richard incurred significant leg injuries in the crash that will limit his mobility for a while. His daughter Lydia has come out from California for a few months to take care of As she is new to this area, I have suggested that she call the club for any assistance or questions about the area. She has my phone number to contact us. She can be reached at the hospital at Richards room most days. New Members On a happier note, I would like to welcome new members to the club. There has been a that has quite literally overwhelmed the board. We have processed five new members this month. They are:
There are still a several other people in the process of joining the club, that should be processed in the next week or so. You have probably met or seen several of the new members up at Heber already. They are quite an interesting and diverse group. I strongly recommend getting to know them. An excellent opportunity will be the summer club BBQ June 20 at Heber Airport. Also, sponsors are needed for applicants who do not have any direct personal contacts with the club. To date, I have asked members to sponsor individuals based on my own perceived common interests between the applicant and club member. Sponsorship involves three actions: meeting with the applicant, taking a dual flight at Heber in a club ship as a getting to know the applicant activity (not as a soaring skill check out ride), and presenting the applicant to the club board for the vote. This last part is usually done by phone. If there are members who would like to sponsor new applicants, please contact me. The club BBQ is scheduled for June 20 at Heber. We will also hold the next board meet- ing then. If anyone has any issues to discuss please let me know so that I can schedule them on the agenda. See you all up at Heber! Parke Byron Duty Officer Update Our perfect record of attendance lasted for three weeks. Paul Dykman failed to show or provide a replacement on Saturday, May 16. As a result Paul Dykmans flying privileges are automatically suspended for a period of three weeks ending Saturday, June 6. Many thanks to those who have served the association by showing up and performing their duties. Those people are Walt Konecny, Richard Smith, Jeff Knell, Bob Briggs and Jay Morland. Jay traded with Paul Eastman for Sat. May 30 so that he could be sure to be available when his wife, Kim, delivers twins in September. Planning ahead. Duty Officer Scedule
