I would like to thank everyone who attended the Glider Assembly and Duty Officer Training on Saturday, April 24th. The rain and snow held off long enough for us to complete our tasks. My thanks to Fred Wright for conducting the duty officer training. I would like to propose that we repeat this training for anyone who missed it during our next USA picnic. We had an above average turn out, but we need everyones participation. My thanks to the following people who attended: Fred Wright, Walt Konecny, Stan Misiewicz, Paul Eastman, Dave Lane, Matt Zimmer, Matt McNamara, Grant Davis (came all the way from Rexburg), Doug Spencer, Carl Redlin, Jeff Knell, Bob Briggs, Jerry Hartshorn, Jack Corneveaux, Karl Wemick, Dale Hadley, Craig Thomas and Jim Krog. I always look forward to seeing my USA friends, and getting the season started. Soaring often seems like a lone eagle sport, and I really enjoy the camaraderie. We assembled the Grob and the 1-34, again struggling with the Grob wing attachment, until finally in exasperation we read the directions in the manual and achieved victory. It must be a testosterone thing! The 2-33 is still in Morgan, waiting for Wayne to complete his work. He is in Washington, DC as I write this column, so he will not be able to complete the annual on the Grob and 1-34 until sometime after the 3rd of May. We will strive to put the 2-33 back in service as soon as Wayne completes the painting so that we can then assemble it. It will be like a new ship, right down to the new belts. I would like to express my thanks to John Mildon, Lee Steorts, Doug Spencer, Walt Konency, Dave Lane, Stan Misiewicz and everyone whos pitched in and done a yeoman s job of refurbishing our fleet. Now, having said that, everyone be careful out there! Lets make 99 the best soaring season yet! - Matt Zimmer ANNUAL FLIGHT REVIEWS All association members who wish to fly association gliders must have an annual flight review with an association sanctioned CFIG before flying as pilot-in-command of an association aircraft. There are currently two active association-sanctioned CFIGs; Dave Robinson and Roy Johnson. As in the past, this is a review and not a test. Make the most of the opportunity by taking advantage of the resources you are paying for; the CFIG. Do your homework regarding airport operations and the gliders you are going to fly . Ask about areas you feel uncertain about. Go into the flight review with questions you want answered. Make the CFIG work to earn his pay. An eligibility list has been taped to the door of our cabinet in the Soar Utah hangar. The names of some of those who have completed their reviews have been placed on the list. When you have completed your flight review enter our name and the appropriate information on the sheet. Your name on the list is your eligibility to fly association gliders. DUTY OFFICER SCHEDULE Here is your opportunity to contribute something to the association other than your dues. No, your dues alone are not enough. Below is the schedule for this year. Remember that if you are unable to serve on your scheduled day you must arrange for a replacement. If you fail to show up and do not arrange for a replacemment you lose your flying priveleges for a period of three weeks. Last year we only had two no-shows.
Remember: It is the function of the duty officer to aid and facilitate members flying on Saturday when scheduled flying is limited to two hours on busy days. In no way is a member relieved of the pre-flight responsibilities of pilot-in-command in ascertaining the airworthiness of a glider or judging weather or airport conditions. The pilot-in-command alone has full responsibility for the safety of his/her flight. Membership List Update It has been noted that many phone numbers and mail and email addresses are not current. Please include current information on your next check to the treasurer or phone Karl with the info. This year board members are: Parke Byron, President 582-7802 |
