President’s Message

As I write this, it is just about time to wrap up the soaring season at Heber, but there is still plenty of work that needs to be done. The gliders were disassembled on Saturday, October 31. Thanks to John Mildon, Lee Steorts, Doug Spencer, Stan Misiewicz, Karl Wernick, Jack Corneveaux and Fred Wright for helping. We need volunteers to work on stripping the 2-33 nose and replacing the bondo, before we ship it up to Morgan to have it recovered and painted this winter. Please contact Chris Steinman (571-4835) if you would like to help on this project. Also, we need an indoor site where the work can be done, any offers, locations or suggestions are appreciated.

Over the winter the 1-34 will be getting a cockpit facelift courtesy of Doug Spencer and Walt Konecny. Doug will be refinishing the interior, and Walt will replace the instrument panel and install a radio. Afterwards, it will be taken down to Hurricane for the balance of the winter (actual date not yet determined), and available for flying. Anyone who is planning on going down but has not yet flown in Hurricane should review the local field situation with an experienced club member. Walt Konecny, Lynn Alley and Lee Steorts are some of the pilots who are familiar with the area.

The Fall BBQ was a great success, kudos to Bill Hill for a great job organizing the event. We had a very nice turn out of club members who brought some terrific dishes on a gorgeous fall afternoon. The return to the old format of bring a dish resulted in a number of nice treats. I am already looking forward to the summer BBQ next June.

On a similar note, the annual membership meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 18 at 7 p.m. One slight problem, we have not yet selected a location at the time of this newsletter. This year we are trying to have a sit down dinner at a local restaurant with spouses and children invited. Club business will be limited to voting on a new board for 1999. We are also planning a slide show of Heber soaring activity. Enclosed with this newsletter is a questionnaire regarding your soaring activities this past year. Please fill it out and return to me within the next week. We will review some of the results with potential “prizes” for some of the categories at the annual meeting. (If anyone is thinking that these will be serious prizes, they are obviously in the wrong club.)

Soar Utah, and Dave Robinson in particular, would like to extend their appreciation to club members who helped out at the September EAA fly in. Those volunteering included David Lane, Jerry Hartshorn, Paul Schneider, and the Steinman’s: Chris, Robin and Sean. I would also like to thank these members for responding to the request to help out.

I have not yet seen the final tally of the duty officer turn out. Overall, though, we have had a very good response this summer, and I would like to thank all the members who took a turn this year and contributed. Lastly, please remember that come January, the club dues statement will include the annual SSA dues. This is the third year for this procedure so most of us should be getting used to seeing the higher bill by now. New members may have a prorated bill or have already paid for the year depending on when they joined the SSA. Please don’t take out your frustration on the club treasurer in January if the dues statement still manages to catch you off guard!
